See if you can relate to a portion of this mom’s email question:
I struggle coming up with ideas of discipline. Where do you get your ideas/inspiration for wise parenting? It feels like there is less sound advice available. My family lives far away, so I can’t follow their example and don’t always ask for their advice. My friends are in the same stage of parenting and struggling as much as I am to figure out the best way to train our children up! I’m just curious and wonder if you have a couple of sources you glean knowledge.
First and foremost, nothing on our website or blog that you have found helpful or encouraging has come from me. I am simply a vessel that God has chosen to use in this way. I am thrilled that God is blessing you through what He is teaching me along my parenting journey.
I take no credit for any of the ideas. Some of the ideas have come from books, several on the fly (by the Holy Spirit), and much from by background. I grew up in a family of incredible teachers and disciplinarians. I have seen it lived and much is second nature. Also, I have learned a lot from Bubs’ therapist.
The most important thing you can do is to spend time reading the Bible and praying. Ask for the Holy Spirit to speak loud and strong throughout the day. Also, pray that you will listen and obey.
Next, I would highly suggest reading three parenting books. These books, which I call the 5-Star-Discipline books, are ones that I feel contain information that is tangible and easy to implement.
I highly suggest the books by Love and Logic but I specifically found the Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood: Practical Parenting from Birth to Six Years book helpful with our little ones. Several posts on this blog have been written with ideas specifically taken from this book.
Kevin Leman is an amazing author. He has written three of my most suggested books – Have a New Kid By Friday, It’s Your Kid Not a Gerbil, and Sheet Music. There is no beating around the bush in his writing. He isn’t afraid to step on toes but just hangs it all out to dry. While reading this book, I have stopped and read portions to my husband because some parts are hilarious. But even in his humor, Have a New Kid by Friday: How to Change Your Child’s Attitude, Behavior & Character in 5 Days is filled with specific ideas to help change your home. Read more…
Disclaimer:
Please understand that with any of the these books there are good and bad ideas. Read through each book with a fine-tooth comb. Check scripture references and make sure that nothing it out of context.
Finally, understand that no discipline will be successful unless words are followed up with action. If you are unwilling to do the “action” part, don’t waste your time reading any of these books! Because in introducing the new expectations you will frustrate yourself and confuse your child.
Have a specific discipline question? Let me know and I will be glad to post some thoughts!

"Grace Based Parenting" is excellent. I participated in a small group on this book last year and loved it.

I have heard of this book but haven't gone through it myself. Thank you for sharing and I will take a look at it!
