Review & Giveaway: It's Your Kid Not a Gerbil

Stop whatever you are doing and purchase this book. It will change your world and you will be eternally grateful for Kevin Leman writing it and for me suggesting it. I 99.9% promise. (There is always that one!)

It’s Your Kid Not a Gerbil is one of the best books that I have read in a while. I have suggested it to so many people in just the last few days. God used this book in a way that He hasn’t used anything in my life for several months. (You will learn more on this blog in the next few days just how.) Do yourself a favor. Go get this book. Whether you have one small child or kids in high school, don’t wait until Christmas or your next birthday for someone to buy it for you. Get it now. (Can you tell I really, really suggest this book?)

First of all, Kevin Leman is an amazing author. He has written two (now three) of my most suggested books – Have a New Kid By Friday and Sheet Music. There is no beating around the bush in his writing. He isn’t afraid to step on toes but just hangs it all out to dry. While reading this book, I have stopped and read portions to my husband because some parts are hilarious. My husband never reads and he is working his way through this book.

Second, this book is eye opening to the facts of life. “Creating a Happier and Less-Stressed Home.” Who doesn’t want that? The problem is that it is kind of hard to hear what we need to do to gain that. Sometimes while reading, I felt my heart brake with the honesty of the situation. But I was encouraged to see that a happy and less-stressed home is very attainable.

Kevin Leman gives practical ideas to create a place that truly is a home. A place that our children want to return to after they leave the nest. He explains how to discipline with grace. How to mold each child in a way that will cause them to be a light all while having a relationship with you as their parent. I gleaned ideas for my marriage. (He has a special section for single parents as well.) On and on I have points underlined.

We all deeply desire the Walton-family, goodnight-John-boy home. Yet our priorities get out of whack. Pick up this book and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you through Kevin Leman’s words. I assure you, it will change your life if you let it. And you will never look back.

Kevin Leman isn’t perfect. There are even a few things that I don’t necessarily agree with in this book. But, overall, God is going to use this book to transform families. Will yours be one of them?
