Navigating Grumpiness: Finding Gratitude Amidst the Hard

11/27/2023 by Heidi

Ever feel like you’re walking through life with a perpetual frown? Are you tired of how your grumpy attitude is impacting your relationships, especially within your family? You’re not alone.

Grumpiness is an emotion that can easily take over our lives, especially when life becomes a bit challenging and weariness sets in. However, allowing grumpiness to take the driver’s seat in our lives can adversely affect our relationships, particularly with our children and spouse. So, how do you stop the crazy cycle of grumpy moods? Melanie and I have some ideas that we’ve learned in our seasons of grumpiness.

Understanding the Roots of Grumpiness

The first step towards addressing grumpiness is understanding its roots. Often, our grumpiness is not random but is rooted in unmet basic needs such as proper rest, nutritious food, and genuine friendships. Our bodies are crying out in the form of emotions for sleep, adequate care, and emotional strength. Inadequate attention to these aspects can lead to a grumpy disposition.

External factors cannot be overlooked. What we consume in terms of news, social media, and social interactions can fundamentally affect our overall moods. Being selective about what influences our lives is critically important. This may require looking at social media or TV less as they have the potential to build a sense of inadequacy in our hearts.

Truth vs lies

Seeking God for a Mind Shift

Although often overlooked, our perspective of God can significantly influence our moods and consequently, our interactions. Our attitudes often mirror our understanding of God and who we are as His children. It is when I forget who I am, and whose I am that the voices of the world become louder. The world’s voice will always either discourage or build pride in my heart which will in turn affect my attitude as I see those around me above or beneath me.

To combat this, acknowledge God’s blessings on a daily basis. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us, we should “give thanks in all circumstances.” Make a running list of blessings to include in your prayer journal. Meditate on a list of verses that list the lies Satan tells us vs the truth of God. Listen to the “What Lies Are You Believing” podcast for other practical tips. Aligning our thoughts with truth of who God is and who I am becomes a crucial step towards shifting from grumpiness to gratitude.

Breaking Negative Patterns with Deliberate Actions

November and December gatherings can create challenges with extended family. Often, relationship issues are magnified with time together, leading to heightened grumpiness. Just the apprehension to come face to face with a contrary person can affect our mood.

Begin by distinguishing between internal vs external issues. Invite God into the dark corners of past hurt and anger to speak truth and prepare your heart for upcoming meetings. Ask questions like:

  • What do I own in this situation?
  • What is true/not true about the past?
  • What can I let go of and where do I need to establish boundaries?

Externals issues are ones that you can’t change. For example, we can’t change who is in our families, but we can put up healthy boundaries for all involved. We can’t change other people’s behaviors, words, or choices, but we can, through the power of the Holy Spirit, guard our tongues and make wise choices. When we focus on our behavior, we can walk away grateful for the work God is doing in our lives.

Navigating grumpiness and transforming it into gratitude is a journey, not a destination. You will have victories and there will be setbacks. It requires continually asking the Lord for humility, filling your mind with truth, and making a conscious effort to focus on the blessings rather than the challenges. By doing so, we can finally deal with the perpetual frown and stop our moods from negatively affecting our families.
