The Autism Sisterhood is an easy-to-read, go-to manual for parents who have a child diagnosed with autism. A quick read yet packed full of little tips, this book is written by a mom who has been there. Michele C. Brooke's goal in the 48 pages was to create a resource that parents could quickly read to help them come ...
Disabilities
When we dreamed about a family, my husband and I never imagined the challenges that we would face. It wasn't in our plans to have children with diagnoses and disabilities. But, none of this was a surprise to God. He knew that our children would need us; and we would need them.
This blog was started to encourage and help families, especially those with challenging children. While reading these posts, I pray that you will find ideas to implement in your home. Secondly, I pray that you will find hope and encouragement knowing that you are not alone. Finally, we pray that God will use Our Story to encourage you.
Sensory Tubs
Part of Sensory Processing Disorder is struggling with the feelings of touch. Sensory tubs can be created to help expose your child to different feelings. In our home, our "sensory tub" is the sandbox under the swing set or a sink or bathtub full of water. Bubs' OT had a beans and rice pool as well. Typically we do ...
What is Sensory Processing Disorder?
Thank you to Your Therapy Source - once again - for letting us know about this wonderful video on Sensory Processing Disorder. You can view the video at ABC News. ...
Talk-2-Me Thursday Question
Here is a question that I received yesterday for "Talk-2-Me Thursday": What do you recommend for a child with Sensory Processing Disorder who is unable to have Occupational Therapy? Thank you for this question. Wow, this is a hard one because I believe so much in the Occupational Therapy that we have received for Bubs. And there are so many ...
Dear Mr. Rosemond: Sensory Disorder or Stubborn Kid?
Dear Mr. Rosemond: I rarely read your columns but the title "Sensory Disorder or Stubborn Kid: You Decide" intrigued me. But after reviewing your book The Well-Behaved Child and reading this article, it is official. John Rosemond, you and I are not on the same page. You started out the column by quoting the http://www.spdfoundation.net/ ...
Sensory Brushing & Joint Compression Technique
Back in February when Bubs was having such a terrible week, I called his OT hoping to come up with something to do. I truly was at my wit's end with his behavior. Ms. W told me that she wanted us to immediately start the "brushing technique". She was going to send two brushes home, detailed instructions, as well as teach us what to do. I was ...
What Behaviors Are Sensory Based?
I have mentioned before Your Therapy Source - a blog that I follow. I have found bits of pieces of info that has been helpful. You can view a Motivation Assessment Scale to see how much of a behavior is sensory or just behavior. I have not done it myself but find it very interesting and will soon fill it out! After the questions ...
Sensory Processing Disorder Book
Ayn suggested the book Raising a Sensory Smart Child: The Definitive Handbook for Helping Your Child with Sensory Processing Issues to me. I have not read it but the product description looks great! Click to find out more... Thank you Ayn for this suggestion! ...
Using a Trampoline to Calm Down
One of the first things that the Occupational Therapist told us to get when Bubs began therapy was a trampoline. Our pediatrician echoed this purchase as well. The jumping on a trampoline engages the brain in some miraculous way. The suggestion was for a mini trampoline for cold weather use. But we were also gifted a 12' trampoline for ...
Just a Late Bloomer?
When we started Bubs with Occupational Therapy, we had several people comment on our decision. One of the comments we received came by way of a mom of three children. Her suggestion was that we just wait because Bubs might be a late bloomer like her son was. Last night, my husband and I were talking about that exact comment while thinking ...
