Back in February when Bubs was having such a terrible week, I called his OT hoping to come up with something to do. I truly was at my wit's end with his behavior. Ms. Wendy told me that she wanted us to immediately start the "brushing technique". She was going to send two brushes home, detailed instructions, as well as teach us what ...
Disabilities
When we dreamed about a family, my husband and I never imagined the challenges that we would face. It wasn't in our plans to have children with diagnoses and disabilities. But, none of this was a surprise to God. He knew that our children would need us; and we would need them.
This blog was started to encourage and help families, especially those with challenging children. While reading these posts, I pray that you will find ideas to implement in your home. Secondly, I pray that you will find hope and encouragement knowing that you are not alone. Finally, we pray that God will use Our Story to encourage you.
Guest Post: Life with Disabilities
This is the final excerpt of Kari's story. Read Day #1 here. We left the neurologist's building and I called my husband. I told him “it’s official, he has Autism”. I cried as I held the sweet little hand of my precious boy as we walked to the car. When I got into the driver seat, the tears were gone. I was ready to help our son. Now, ...
Guest Post: Life with Disabilities
This is a continuation of the Guest Post from yesterday. Read the first part here. What is Wrong? We survived like this for months. This is when we realized we were not dealing with normal childhood issues. This wasn’t right. We couldn’t dry our son’s back after a bath because he would scream hysterically. We bought a very expensive towel and ...
Guest Post: Life with Disabilities
When asked, Kari willingly shared her story with me of her life as a Mom to children with disabilities. Excerpts from her Guest Post will cover the next two days as well. Be sure to leave a comment if you have a question for Kari. Our Story I want to start this whole thing with a short introduction of who I am and where we, as a family, came ...
Confession Time: Where Have You Been?
Have you wondered where I have been? I understand. My computer time has been cut down drastically. I hope things will be leveling out soon. Confession #1 - We have not done "school" for three weeks. There. I said it. Because of a number of reasons (for another post), we haven't had the time or the energy. But, you know what? That is ...
As Easy As Riding a Bike…Unless You Have SPD
Last summer we decided it was time for Bubs to lose the training wheels. We were hit with strong resistance. So, we do what all good parents do...we took the bike to therapy. Ms. W was more than happy to help. Bubs wasn't the first kid that she has worked with this on. He didn't give her the resistance, and it also helped that "Ms. W said we were ...
Do You See that Look?
A few weeks ago, I blogged about the horrific behavior we were seeing out of Bubs. It was truly the worst six days that we had had since starting therapy. Seriously the choices that he was making worried me. But it was the look in his eyes that truly scared me. It was a look that showed defiance, a stronghold, and rebellion. The exact opposite ...
Rough Week
Our rough stage continues - day six. I just got off the phone with our OT (did I mention how much I praise God for this lady!). She is going to have us start using a "brushing technique" and is also going to put Bubs on a behavior plan that he has to bring back to her at therapy on Monday. She was amazed at how far Bubs has regressed. I think ...
Finding the Right Therapist
Throughout the blog, I’ve shared how grateful I am for our Occupational Therapist. Ms. Wendy truly is a gift from God. She challenges Bubs to grow and improve, and she partners with us so we can support him at home. I regularly thank God for leading us to her. It’s through OT that we’ve seen such incredible growth—honestly, it feels like we’ve ...
Stop the Silly?
I feel like I have a pretty good idea of how to handle a large part of Bubs' sensory issues. But there is one that I am struggling with. That is silliness. Bubs is excessively silly. Not just five-year-old-silly. I realize that this is common of these kids. I am talking over the top. So, I turn the tables and ask for your help!! How do ...
